CLASP: Coastal Long-term Automated Self-calibrating Profiler
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) 2006-2011 strategic plan recognizes the need for an improved observational network in estuaries and the coastal ocean and estuaries. However, without innovation, logistics and cost considerations make attainment of this goal difficult. With support from NOAA, Green Eyes is developing a profiling system for fixed platforms such as docks, tide stations, and oil rigs that automatically collects high vertical resolution hydrographic data for periods of several months without costly on-site servicing. A proof of concept prototype was constructed and successfully tested ( watch video) - now Green Eyes is developing a commercial prototype that will measure Temperature, Salinity, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Turbidity, Chlorophyll Fluorescence and Nitrate (wet chemical method).
To collect vertical water column data, a pump is lowered through the water column via a computer controlled, variable speed winch and water flows through the pump hose to a flow-through, multiprobe sensor cup. Data are collected continuously on the downcast and at defined depths after adequate flushing on the upcast. CLASP also includes innovative features to prevent biofouling of the complete sensor environment and in the winch plumbing, as well as systems to recalibrate the sensors with on-board standards. As with all Green Eyes systems, CLASP maintains and verifies data quality over extended deployments. The addition of Green Eyes' Water to Web system enables real-time Internet data posting and remote system control.
